Almost two years ago now, I gave my boyfriend (now husband) a subscription to Netflix.
His mother had moved in with him temporarily to recuperate after she had fallen and broken her hip. As a result, we were “grounded” for much of the winter with all three of us spending a lot of time together in the living room, her make-shift bedroom.
Netflix is a DVD rental service that allows members to maintain a list of—must-see—movies (recent releases and old-time favorites), documentaries, serialized television shows, and other programming (current inventory is something like 65,000 titles).
You can have as many as three disks at home for viewing; as soon as one is returned, another from the pending queue is immediately sent out to replace it. We have a list of almost 300 titles we intend to view. The service was a lifesaver two winters ago. Now married with our own private space, and the freedom to get out more frequently—although we now officially live with Mary—it is still our favorite indulgence.
We made the lifestyle choice to not subscribe to cable television. We save a bit of money for sure (costs $9.99/month vs competitive cable rates for mostly a bunch of shows we knew we never wanted to see…or feared we might waste time watching anyway), but more importantly we’ve rested control back over our evenings. We also get to customize our viewing based on our interests.
Occasionally we need to exert patience to wait for programs like Arrested Development or our current obsession, The Wire, to become available. On the other hand, we probably view on average four movies per week and several episodes of a top-notch series like The West Wing from the very beginning. We’re suckers for great writing!
We still like to get out to see current issue movies in the theaters, but there is no way we’d ever keep up with all that pique our interest. Netflix lets us keep track of what we don’t want to miss completely, and indulges an odd mood every now and then for something completely unexpected. The service also make recommendations based on past rentals.
This is an unabashed plug for Netflix. Note that I’ve even put the icon link on this blog template. I recommend it to everyone. And since I often write about what I’ve seen, makes sense to direct as many folks as possible to one of my “favorite things.” But no, The Sound of Music is not on our list.
