Dennis Kucinich in Manchester

We had an unexpectedly interesting day yesterday. Our friend Anne was presenting a workshop in Manchester, so we decided to meet her at Shaskeen (an Irish pub) on Elm mid-afternoon. She ran late, so we sipped stout and Guiness while doing our saved-up Sunday crossword puzzles. About an hour later she showed up, and while we visited, Dennis Kucinich supporters started rolling in and moving to the back room. We decided to hang out to hear him. Hopeless campaign perhaps, but he may be the only honest, not hampered by contribution “strings” one in the bunch. He was delayed by other events, natch, so we waited and chatted, got interviewed by students from Durham, Franklin Pierce, and Keene, as well as the Nashua Telegraph, and soaked up the “college” days feel.

He was pretty interesting (on the war, health care, building US infrastructure, etc), and Roger asked a couple of good questions. We got a chance to chat with him for a few minutes right after his remarks. Roger gave him our card by way of offering moral support (at least the primary round). He loved the dandelion logo and said it was just like some concept he had going…

Anyway, he gave us his card with personal cell and email, asking for feedback on his web site (no, this is not a paying gig, just fun). He then invited us to join his small entourage for dinner, so Anne and we took him/them around the corner for Thai (he’s vegan) and enjoyed a most bizarre evening of conversation with groupies, a couple of really smart people, and listened to him talk about how he met/married his young his wife, what he’s been up to here and abroad, and his vision for what’s possible.

Natural optimism and hope bubble to the surface after such serendipitous encounters. We wish him well. Whether or not he’s the best person to lead our country next, I do hope he’ll be successful enough to bump up the level of debate and compel others to do more than talk. That would be something.
