Last night we had a treat. A full-grown bear wandered around in our backyard at dusk, checking out the bird feeders (now empty) and looked over to the house to see what we might all be up to. I hope he was amused to find three adults with cameras in front of faces and three pups with snouts perched on window sills.

He came by two times last week, tipping over our compost barrels and looking to find out what was lurking in a couple of plastic pails (birdseed). He picked up one in his teeth (we were spying no further than five feet from the other side of a glass sliding door) and galloped into the woods with it.
We so want to misbehave and leave out something for him to eat, but we won’t. But we are now on alert hoping to catch another view, in the early morning or at night. The daily turkey strut and the occasional rough grouse siting is fun, but the bear is a thrill. He is magnificent: tall, with lustrous and dark black fur. We’d love to get a better picture of him.
We live at the top of a wooded hill, so our yard is a tempting clearing and makes a wonderful wildlife stage. It’s amazing to think of all that lives in those woods behind our home.
