My Golden Retriever Ollie was a personality among us, helping to shape our actions and color our days with spirit and laughter.

I loved him dearly, and can see and feel everything about him from his “smart bump” to the lush, curly fur on his chest and back ridge to his soft, graying face and knotted ear “nerdles” to his long, smooth flank and straw tail. Ollie “one note” made us pay attention and it was always worthwhile.

In any case, he was a true love and each night I miss tucking him into his nest and whispering in his ear, “You are such a good boy!”

This week, I walked my talk—literally—and did something that had been on my mind for a long while. I cleaned up a 1.5 mile stretch of a road near my home. It was an inconvenience and I didn’t want to take the time away from other things I had planned to do, but the reward of following through on my good intention has improved my environment for me and my neighbors.

This week, I encourage you to think about what you can do… and then take action!

Roger and I got a jump start on summer and we’re on vacation in the Dominican Republic this week (I’ll share pictures next week!) at the Sun Village Resort at Cofresi. I won a seven-days, all-inclusive stay in a raffle last spring. Lucky ducks are we!We are pampering ourselves with sun-filled days on the beach and by the pool, snorkeling with new bright-colored friends, showing off our Latin Dance moves at the resort’s nightclub (we took lessons in preparation for this trip), and trying every local culinary treat.

Our days are for the most part unplanned, subject to our moods and general whimsy, and we’re open to being delighted by whatever comes up. We actively anticipated losing ourselves in the stories and places found in the novels we packed for the trip.

Leisure and relaxation are the perfect mental space for considering what to keep and what to drop from our regular day to day routines.

The pre-trip frenzy feels like it all took place several months ago. Can we hold on to the glow of rejuvenation, incorporating the simple pleasures that can make a difference any day?

How are you spending your summer vacation? Are you planning self-indulgence, learning, adventure? Enjoy!

Tomorrow from 9am-2pm, we are hocking our stuff in the Hillsborough Pride town-wide yard sale. We registered last week, so there is no backing out now… even though we’ve had a crazy and distracting week

Since our name and location is already printed on the event map, we can expect early-picking prowlers long before my first cup of black coffee has kicked in. Why did we set ourselves up to do work on a holiday weekend? Because we have too much stuff. Way too much stuff.

Last year, Roger and I sold our separate houses, and moved in with his mother Mary at her home. Luckily, there was a garage bay for the excess each of us brought to our “instant family” deal. Mary’s excess resides in bay 1, Roger’s in bay 2, and mine in bay 3 (in the order of our arrival), and it’s a complete jumble on the second floor. The goal for tomorrow afternoon is to unload enough furniture and clutter to be able to move around in the garage without hurting ourselves.

We’ve set up tables to showcase smaller items, lugged a whole lot of furniture; duplicate appliances, and long-overlooked hobbies out of the garage bays; and priced items to entice purchase. We don’t want to drag things back into the darkness.

I hope we’ll be counting our cash tomorrow afternoon, while sipping Margaritas in the hammock and waiting for the grill to heat up. I’ll let you know how it all turns out next week.

Have a relaxing and rejuvenating time.

Big hug and a (tired) smile.
