School’s Out!

Roger and I got a jump start on summer and we’re on vacation in the Dominican Republic this week (I’ll share pictures next week!) at the Sun Village Resort at Cofresi. I won a seven-days, all-inclusive stay in a raffle last spring. Lucky ducks are we!We are pampering ourselves with sun-filled days on the beach and by the pool, snorkeling with new bright-colored friends, showing off our Latin Dance moves at the resort’s nightclub (we took lessons in preparation for this trip), and trying every local culinary treat.

Our days are for the most part unplanned, subject to our moods and general whimsy, and we’re open to being delighted by whatever comes up. We actively anticipated losing ourselves in the stories and places… Continue reading

Making Room for the Unknown

Tomorrow from 9am-2pm, we are hocking our stuff in the Hillsborough Pride town-wide yard sale. We registered last week, so there is no backing out now… even though we’ve had a crazy and distracting week

Since our name and location is already printed on the event map, we can expect early-picking prowlers long before my first cup of black coffee has kicked in. Why did we set ourselves up to do work on a holiday weekend? Because we have too much stuff. Way too much stuff.

In every instance, it is my dear husband who will have to make horrible decisions. But having these documents properly executed and distributed to all the people who might influence the disbursement of my parts and possessions, may ease the burden a bit.

It’s important to take care of these life matters before death sneaks up and snatches your last moment. Good intentions won’t be worth much. Taking care of business while healthy and “of sound mind” (there was some discussion in the lawyer’s office about the validity in my case) will make it easier for those left behind… Continue reading

Loon-atics at 30

Last Sunday, Roger and I drove up to the Village at Loon Mountain in Lincoln, NH to join 23 other members of my extended family on my father’s side.

Amazingly this was the 30th anniversary of the annual fall gathering at the timeshare condo my grandparents purchased back in 1976. According to my dad, they made the commitment so that they would have a place to travel with friends and to reciprocate the interesting invitations they received from other in retirement. Unfortunately, my grandmother died that same year before they have had a chance to show off their shiny new digs.

But they started a family tradition few of us missed more than once or twice over the years. My grandfather presided over the week each year until his health failed in… Continue reading
