Roger and I have become “lumber jerks.”
We’re outfitted with a splitter, chipper, and most recently and ATV to lug our logs about. Last peeps I ever thought would travel this path.
Living on 18 wooded acres presents the option of harvesting and preparing our own winter heating supply. Taking this up at mid-life may not list as one of our brightest decisions, but it keeps us relatively fit.
Later his season, we have a local forester, our friend Joe Trudeau, coming to do a formal audit of our land so that we can make a plan for how to tackle our harvest over the coming years. We’ll… Continue reading
This week, I walked my talk—literally—and did something that had been on my mind for a long while. I cleaned up a 1.5 mile stretch of a road near my home. It was an inconvenience and I didn’t want to take the time away from other things I had planned to do, but the reward of following through on my good intention has improved my environment for me and my neighbors.

This week, I encourage you to think about what you can do… and then take action!
Roger and I got a jump start on summer and we’re on vacation in the Dominican Republic this week (I’ll share pictures next week!) at the Sun Village Resort at Cofresi. I won a seven-days, all-inclusive stay in a raffle last spring. Lucky ducks are we!We are pampering ourselves with sun-filled days on the beach and by the pool, snorkeling with new bright-colored friends, showing off our Latin Dance moves at the resort’s nightclub (we took lessons in preparation for this trip), and trying every local culinary treat.

Our days are for the most part unplanned, subject to our moods and general whimsy, and we’re open to being delighted by whatever comes up. We actively anticipated losing ourselves in the stories and places… Continue reading
Tomorrow from 9am-2pm, we are hocking our stuff in the Hillsborough Pride town-wide yard sale. We registered last week, so there is no backing out now… even though we’ve had a crazy and distracting week
Since our name and location is already printed on the event map, we can expect early-picking prowlers long before my first cup of black coffee has kicked in. Why did we set ourselves up to do work on a holiday weekend? Because we have too much stuff. Way too much stuff.
Last year, Roger and I sold our separate houses, and moved in with his mother Mary at her home. Luckily, there was a garage bay for the excess each of us brought to our “instant family” deal. Mary’s excess resides in bay… Continue reading
Last night we had a treat. A full-grown bear wandered around in our backyard at dusk, checking out the bird feeders (now empty) and looked over to the house to see what we might all be up to. I hope he was amused to find three adults with cameras in front of faces and three pups with snouts perched on window sills.

He came by two times last week, tipping over our compost barrels and looking to find out what was lurking in a couple of plastic pails (birdseed). He picked up one in his teeth (we were spying no further than five feet from the… Continue reading
